Fantasy Serie A, in English

Serie A's best return came from a wing-back, which is not what anyone expects. All 20 clubs and 646 players are in the pool — and so is everyone from the other four of Europe's top leagues, in the same squad, under the same £100m.

Who actually scored

The Serie A players worth owning

Italy has the deepest pool in the game — more priced players than any other league — and the strangest shape to it. Only one forward made the top ten last season. Three defenders did. Clean sheets are the currency here, and a game that pays a defender four points for one and six for a goal rewards Italian football more than it rewards anywhere else. Ranked by points returned last season — no editorial thumb on the scale, and every number read straight out of the game's own pool.

Where the value is

The players below all cost £5.5m or less and all started regularly. A squad that fills its bench and its fourth and fifth defenders from this list is a squad that can afford two of the names in the table above — which is the whole trade every manager is making, every week.

How to use this league

Keep your favourites. Add the rest of Europe.

You do not have to choose. Take the Serie A players you would never sell, then fill the rest from Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga or Ligue 1. The squad rules are the only limit: 15 players, £100m, three per club.

Buy the defence, not the attack

Serie A put three defenders in its top ten last season and exactly one forward. If you are building around Italian football, that is the instruction: take the defenders and the wing-backs, and buy your goals in a league that produces them more cheaply.

This is also the league where a goalkeeper is worth thinking hard about. Italian keepers face fewer shots and keep more clean sheets, and a keeper is the one position where you are buying a club's defence rather than a player.

Questions

Fantasy Serie A, answered

Why are Serie A defenders so highly rated here?

Because the scoring rewards them and Italian football produces them. A clean sheet pays a defender 4 points and a goal pays 6, and Serie A sides keep more clean sheets than any other league in the pool. Three of the ten highest scorers in Serie A last season were defenders.

Is there a fantasy Serie A game in English?

Yes. Fantasy Football Europe covers all 20 Serie A clubs and 646 Serie A players in English, with the same rules as Fantasy Premier League. You can build a squad entirely from Serie A, or mix Serie A players with players from the other four of Europe's top leagues in the same team.

Can I build a squad only from Serie A?

You can. Last season the best legal XI drawn only from Serie A cost £83.8m of the £100m budget and returned 1797 points. Most managers use a league they know as the core and fill the rest of the squad from wherever the value is.

How many Serie A players are there to choose from?

646 in total across 20 clubs, of whom 302 played enough football last season to be worth owning. Prices run from £4.0m to £10.6m.

Is it free?

Yes — free to play, no entry fee, and it runs in any browser with nothing to download.
